Kusama Yayoi: the Dutch years 1965-1970

On Friday March 15 the Society for Japanese Art will organize a guided tour through the Exhibition on Kusama Yayoi at Municipal Museum Schiedam. The number of participants is limited to 15 people. Please note that this highly successful exhibition closes its doors on the 17th, so this presents a last opportunity to visit. The guided tour will be in Dutch.

The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents an exhibition dedicated to the Dutch years of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. On display are the works she made during various periods when she lived and worked in the Netherlands, supplemented with the many photos of Kusama taken in the Netherlands. It is very exceptional that the unknown and very vulnerable work from Kusama's early years can now be seen together. Yayoi Kusama. The Dutch years 1965-1970 paint a surprisingly new picture of a self-confident young Kusama, who lays the foundation for her world-conquering artistic oeuvre in the Netherlands of provo, and youth culture.

Gallery visit

After the guided tour we will visit the gallery of our fellow SJA member Suzanne Klüver.

Her gallery (Suzanne Klüver ‘Kunst en Lijsten’) is specialized in 20th-century Japanese art, including ceramics, fans and kokeshi. She also provides a high-quality framing service.

The Schiedam tour will end with drinks at a typical Schiedam café, offering a wide range of the drink that Schiedam is famous for: Jenever.
